Help with a dog ramp for my tripawd doggy, Eligh.

Hey guys I need some help. My dog had his amputation done 3 days ago and is still recovering. I have 3 stairs in the backyard in 3 different places, and one stair in the middle of the backyard. I am trying to find a ramp that will go over the stairs but the ones I have found at petsmart and petco are made more for cars or do not work for my stairs as they are slightly longer than typical, and I need a ramp for 1 stair as well which I can’t seem to find. Eligh is 10 years old, and has arthritis on his remaining back leg so I don’t want to put too much strain on it. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Also, in the 10 years i’ve had eligh he has never whined, whimpered, and ive only heard him bark less than 10 times. In the last 2 days he has been whimpering and crying, not as loud as many dogs i’ve seen but for him to be whimpering at all is devastating for me. He has broken a leg and fractured another, he also got but by another dog once. Through all of it I never heard so much as 1 whimper from him until this surgery. This is all very new to me and I would be so grateful if someone else with an older tripawd can give me some advice. He is not really eating either. i put his favorite human turkey slices in front of him and he wants nothing to do with it. That maybe a result of the antibiotics, chemotherapy, and fentanyl patch that is currently on him. My email address is akash2001@hotmail.com and my phone number is 925-216-8025, my name is Akash. I will check this blog and if anyone can call me or even email with some advice I would really appreciate it.

I have attached pictures below of the stairs. Thank you guys!

  1. Hi Akash. What kind of cancer does Eligh have, and what type of chemo is he getting (carboplatin, doxirubicin?). My dog Max wasn’t a senior when his leg was amputated due to osteosarcoma, but I can tell you that when he had his chemo treatment, he wasn’t interested in food for a good 24 – 36 hours afterward. We would always feed him something bland, like chicken (no skin). As for the whimpering/whining, you have to remember that Eligh is on a very strong cocktail of meds right now. My Max was pretty out of it when we first got him home from the hospital; the meds tend to do that to our pups. Having said that, if you believe he is in pain, I encourage you to call the hospital You’ve paid them a lot of money, so they can take the time to answer your questions/concerns. I hope Eligh starts to feel better really soon. And I’m sure some other members will chime in with some answers. Also, if you haven’t already done so, post your questions over on the forums, there’s a lot more “traffic” over there, and I think you’ll get a lot of answers. In fact, there’s a member who just built her blind tripawd a ramp and posted photos. Good luck! We’ll be sending positive thoughts to Eligh for a quick recovery!

  2. Eligh, I’m sorry I just now saw your blog. How are you today? I hope everything is better.

Hey peoples, keep in mind that changing a dog’s behavior when it comes to using stairs can be a challenge. Don’t give up on the ramp but also know that if Eligh doesn’t use it that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Many dogs will try to do as much as they can on three legs as they did on four. Tripawds are tough that way!
